Ship Shape smiles, Cruising with my John part 3

1a grammy smiles

It has been a good week for me. I am starting to feel better and stronger at last. I was actually able to get some work done in our patios last week. It feels so good to be out of bed, outside in the fresh air and able to do some work.  I’m thankful.

Last week I interrupted my cruise blogging to put in a Father’s Day post. Today I would like to share the ship pics and smiles from our cruise with you.

For us being on the ship is as much a fun part of the vacation as going to the ports of call.

IMG_2942IMG_2959

As soon as we get on board and find our cabin….

IMG_2958

… We start exploring the ship.

IMG_3056IMG_2955

I’m always impressed by the atrium and elevators. They are always pretty, no matter what ship we are on.

IMG_2949IMG_2950

Next we make our way to the Lido deck to check out the buffet and pool.

IMG_3060IMG_3061

John and I rarely play in the pools and have never gone on the water slides but our family does when they cruise with us. It is fun for us to watch other’s enjoying these activities.

IMG_2952IMG_3063

The hot tubs are more our speed. They are especially relaxing  after a long day of walking on a port shore excursion.

IMG_3068IMG_3070

For us it is fun just walking around the ship, going from deck to deck, seeing the sights.

IMG_3047IMG_3048

We usually eat breakfast and lunch from the buffet….

IMG_3053IMG_3054

…where the food is good and beautifully presented….

IMG_3046IMG_3073

…But we nearly always eat dinner in the dining room where they have all kinds of exotic foods as well as the regular fare.  Here you see us having frog legs and escargot.

IMG_3006IMG_3075

The food is delicious every night but formal nights in the dining room is especially nice. That is when they serve the fanciest food like lobster tails and filet of beef. The waiters put on a cute show for us too.

IMG_3009IMG_3010

After dinner there is still lots going on to enjoy before the night is over. We like to attend the live performance show each evening in the big theater, listen to some of the musical groups around the ship and even dance to a slow song or two. (We don’t dance very often, so it always makes me smile when we do on the ship.)

IMG_3013IMG_2965

Each night when we return to our room, cute little towel animals greet us and make us smile. One of our favorite things about cruising is that we just have to unpack once and get to return to the same room each night. That makes the trip much easier and more relaxing than having to change our hotel room each day as we travel.

IMG_3071IMG_3050

We love sea days when we are on the ship all day and don’t have a port of call. There are many things to enjoy on the sea days like this ice carving demo. There are also all sorts of classes and activities to do if you are so inclined.

IMG_3057IMG_3064

We like to play miniature golf , get our walking exercise on decks & enjoy the ocean views.

IMG_3072

We also enjoy having a pizza snack or an ice cream cone.  24 hour pizza and ice cream are available on Carnival Cruises. That makes John smile.(All the cruise lines have pizza and ice cream but Carnival is the only line I know of that serves them 24 hours a day.)

IMG_2943

It is also fun just to relax and read or watch a movie in our cabin.

IMG_2956

Cruising is the perfect vacation for us. We can be as active or as lazy as we want.  I had just had surgery 11 days before we took this last little cruise and I did fine…. it was a great get away and a change of pace.

Dollar for dollar, you can’t get as much for your vacation budget anywhere else. Cruising is very economical considering your hotel, food, entertainment, classes, activities and transportation to wonderful ports of call are all included in one price.  That makes us smile too.

We love cruising through life together….. That is one reason I became a travel agent after we retired from teaching.  We also love cruising with friends. Come join us next time….. or let me plan a cruise for you. Leave me a comment on this blog or email me at

jandltravel@charter.net  if you would like me to find a good deal on a cruise for you.

Until then…. I hope you are cruising along OK and everything is ship shape for you.

Hugs, Grammy Lura

Father’s Day smiles and family pics

1a grammy smiles

I will take a break from my cruising smiles to post some Father’s Day smiles that we made yesterday.

fathers day

My father deserted  our family when I was 7  and both of my grandfathers died before I was born so I never really had a relationship with a father or grandfather growing up.  I missed having a dad and a granddad. That is one reason that I am so thrilled that my children and grands have great dads and at least one grandfather in their lives. The following men in our family make my heart smile.

Fathers day

John is the patriarch of our family.  He is the father of our 3 daughters, Lynell, Mindy and Erin and our son, David.

Dathan is married to our oldest daughter, Lynell. He is the father of Jordan, Justin, Jalen, Johnny and Loni.

Ernie is married to our 2nd daughter, Mindy. He is the father of EJ, Claire and Austin.

Patrick is married to our youngest daughter, Erin. He is the father of Calan and Ellie.

Our son David is married to Marla. He is the father of Emma, Grace, Davey and Evan.

Each of these men are good husbands and fathers. They all love the Lord and seek His guidance in raising their families. I am thankful for each one of them and love them all dearly.

Grampy John’s father’s day started out with a big breakfast in the patio. We were attending church with our daughter, Mindy, which meets 2 hours later than ours so I had plenty of time to fix John all of his favorite breakfast dishes.

fathers day 2IMG_3094

After attending church, we spent the rest of the day at Mindy’s.

IMG_3100

Mindy is our only child that lives in CA. We are thankful to have her family live close to us.

IMG_3101IMG_3103

Little Austin started out the day sick & throwing up but thankfully perked up as the day progressed.

IMG_3102IMG_3108

Mindy always makes a traditional Japanese dinner every year for Father’s Day.

IMG_3107IMG_3111

She took a sushi making class years ago and has become quite the sushi chef.

IMG_3104IMG_3105

EJ put together the salad…

IMG_3113

while Claire made the Miso soup and Mindy fried the tempura shrimp and veggies.

IMG_3115IMG_3118

All the boys gave each dish a big thumbs up….

IMG_3117

… and so did we girls.

IMG_3114IMG_3128

Pictures were taken and rhubarb pie was eaten for dessert. (Rhubarb pie may not be in keeping with the Japanese theme…. but it is Grampy’s favorite pie.)

IMG_3119IMG_3120

My heart smiled ….

IMG_3126IMG_3127

…as I watched these children have fun with their dad…

IMG_3122IMG_3124

and their Grampy.

IMG_3123IMG_3129

Yoda and I both had big smiles on our faces at the end of the  day. Each of our out-of-state kids called John to wish him well and express their love for him.

It was a lovely Father’s Day. I think Grampy John and Ernie felt loved and appreciated.  I hope all good fathers everywhere were as blessed.

Have a great week. Hugs, Grammy Lura
